The Houston Chronicle June 17, 1993, Thursday, 2 STAR Edition SECTION: A; Pg. 30 LENGTH: 148 words HEADLINE: Racetrack plans go ahead BYLINE: Staff KEYWORD: Horse Racing Houston BODY: Former Gov. John B. Connally was a major investor in a proposed horse racing track in Harris County, but his death will not hinder the project, a spokesman said Wednesday. Connally, who had been a member of Maxxam Inc.'s board of directors since 1988, was heading the Maxxam group that became a general partner in Sam Houston Race Park Ltd., said company spokesman Scott Lamb. Sam Houston Race Park is the investment group that holds a state license to build a Class I racetrack. Maxxam has interests in aluminum, forest products and real estate. ""We are deeply saddened by his passing and will miss his involvement in the project immensely, but plans for the track are going forward,'' Lamb said. ""We are still early in the process, but we are on target for what we thought would be a target date, the summer of 1994, to have the facility up and running. '' PAGE 68
