Antonini announced the election of  Lilyan H. Affinito  and Joseph A. 
Califano Jr. to K mart Corporation's (NYSE: KM) board of directors 
effective Sept. 18, 1990, bringing the total number of directors to 14.      
Affinito  is a director and vice chairman of the board of Maxxam Group 
Inc. (formerly Simplicity Pattern Co.).  She began her career with Maxxam 
in 1968 as controller.  In 1972, she was elected to Maxxam's board and in 
1976 she was made president and COO.  She became vice chairman in 1987.      
Affinito  received a bachelor of science degree from Cornell University 
and a master of letters degree from the University of Pittsburgh.     
Califano received his LL.B. degree from Harvard Law School.  In 1961, he 
went to the Pentagon and in 1963 was appointed general counsel of the 
Army.  After serving in various positions within the Department of 
Defense, Califano was appointed special assistant to President Lyndon 
Johnson in 1965.  From 1977 to 1979, he served as secretary of Health, 
Education and Welfare.  He has been in the private practice of law since 
1980.  Presently, he is a senior partner at Dewey Ballantine.  He is the 
author of seven books.     "Both  Lilyan Affinito  and Joseph Califano
